Generation to Generation:

Planned giving is an opportunity for those who care deeply for this church to continue to energize its mission – to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this community and the world.  It is an opportunity for your generosity to serve as a witness and example to others.

WHY PLANNED GIVING?  First Presbyterian Church of Mocksville has drawn people together to worship God for more than 200 years.  Those who came before us established and nurtured the church’s rich history of ministry, mission and fellowship. Now we have the opportunity to plan for the generations to come.

Where will God lead us in the next 200 years?

Making a planned gift will prepare and equip future generations to continue our vital ministries, enabling them to:

     • Adapt to meet the needs of the next generation in our community

     • Maintain and care for this place as our cherished church home, and

     • Provide new ministry opportunities that we cannot foresee today.

LEAVING A LEGACY

A planned gift is one that goes over and above the giving that supports the annual operating budget of the church. You can make this gift while you are still an active member of our congregation, or it can be done in various ways after your lifetime. Planning your gift may enable you to contribute more to the church and/or to conserve other assets for you and your family. Here are some of the more common ways that you might consider making a gift:

Cash Donation:
You may make a cash donation at any time.  It can be designated for a particular program, activity or use. Undesignated gifts will be used in a manner determined by the church’s Session.

Bequest:

You may make a gift after your lifetime through your will or trust. This can be a fixed dollar amount, a specific asset, or a percentage of your estate. This could include cash, real estate, life insurance proceeds, retirement account proceeds, and other assets such as stocks or other securities.

Appreciated Securities:

We are able to accept appreciated stock and other securities through the Davie Community Foundation.  These types of gifts may offer the benefit of reduced tax liability while furthering your charitable goals.  Using appreciated securities that you have held for over one year to make a charitable gift may avoid the long-term capital gains tax and possibly allow you to deduct the full fair-market value of the stock.  To achieve this result, shares must be transferred to the charity, not sold, redeemed, or exchanged.  If they are sold, the gift becomes a cash gift rather than a gift of securities, and you will personally realize the capital gains.  The Community Foundation is acting as a Depository Trust Company (DTC) for the church.  It will accept the transfer from you, then sell the securities and deposit the proceeds into one of the church accounts with the Foundation.  (See the next page for further instructions on how to donate.)

Retirement Accounts:

IRAs, 401(k)s and other tax-deferred retirement accounts can be the most heavily taxed assets in many estates. However, they can be used while you are living to make tax-free contributions to the church – including your pledge. Due to recent tax changes, your heirs will be taxed heavily on any assets remaining in these accounts after you are gone. By choosing to make the church your beneficiary and leaving less tax-burdened assets for your heirs, both parties will benefit.

DONATING SECURITIES

If you would like to make a gift of stocks/ securities to the church, either you or your financial advisor should contact Jane Simpson, president and CEO of the Davie Community Foundation.

  • Specify which FPC fund the transfer should be made to:

    • FPC Endowment Fund or

    • FPC Building Fund.

Jane will supply the details for the transfer (DTC clearing & account numbers).

  • Once the transfer is complete, the stocks/securities will be sold by the Foundation, and the cash added to the church funds held by the Foundation.  You will receive a tax receipt from the Foundation.

  • Notify the church treasurer what you would like your funds to support.

    • The Foundation allows us to convert a gift to current operating funds, if desired.

    • Contact the treasurer through  FPCMTreasurer@gmail.com
